Connection Without Self-Abandonment — Part 4

There is a kind of love many people seek and another kind they’ve actually lived.

Most people have lived love through:

  • self-sacrifice,

  • fawning,

  • emotional caretaking,

  • shrinking to keep peace,

  • overgiving,

  • silence instead of truth,

  • staying available beyond their capacity.

This isn’t love.
It’s fear disguised as devotion.

Real love doesn’t require losing yourself.
Real love requires you to
bring yourself.

Self-Abandonment Looks Like Love When You Don’t Know Another Way

When we learn that:

  • love must be earned,

  • connection requires compliance,

  • conflict threatens safety,

  • needs are inconvenient,

we begin to mistake self-abandonment for love.

But a love that costs you yourself
isn’t love… it’s survival.

You Don’t Lose People When You Choose Yourself — You Lose the Relationships That Required Your Absence

This is the fear that keeps most people silent:

“What if I tell the truth and they leave?”

But here is the real question:

“What if the only version of you they’re attached to is the version that abandons you?”

If authenticity breaks the relationship,
the relationship was breaking
you.

Love expands when we show up truthfully.
It contracts when we disappear.

How to Love Without Losing Yourself

  1. Stay connected to your body.
If your chest tightens, you’re leaving yourself.

  2. Speak earlier instead of later.
    Resentment grows in the silence.

  3. Don’t override your needs.
Needs are not burdens… they are signals.

  4. Let people respond however they respond.
Their discomfort is not your responsibility.

  5. Remain rooted in self-respect.
    Love cannot thrive without it.

Love That Includes You Is the Only Love That Lasts

Real love isn’t about merging.
It’s about meeting:

Your truth meeting theirs.
Your boundaries meeting theirs.
Your presence meeting theirs.

Not two halves looking for completion…
two whole beings choosing connection.

Final Reflection

Ask:

“Where in my relations do I disappear?”
“What would it look like to bring my full self here?”

Love that requires self-abandonment is not love… it’s fear.

Love that includes your truth, your boundaries, your presence, your being…
that love is alive, spacious, honest, and real.
